Two years ago we watched Israel unleash a nightmare on Gaza, flattening neighbourhoods, wiping entire families out of existence, cutting off food and medicine, kidnapping and imprisoning thousands, scorching the skies red with relentless bombs, choking the air with dust and smoke and fire.
Israel’s genocide pushed Palestinians to starvation, and turned Gaza into a scarred landscape full of pain, misery, death.
Today, a fragile ceasefire holds and some of our hostages have come home. Watching Palestinians, steadfast and dignified, finally freed from Israeli prisons filled us with hope and jubilation.
And we can celebrate their return. We can allow ourselves this moment of joy, this moment of relief. But relief and joy are not victory. Justice is victory. Liberation is victory.
To honour every Palestinian freed, every Palestinian still languishing in the horrid conditions of Israeli prisons, every Palestinian who is now just a memory because Israel has snuffed out their life, we must take action. For Hind. For Saleh. For Refaat. For the thousands of others whose names we never got to hear.
Nearly two years ago, I stood at one of these rallies and said that the worst thing we could do is hear the word ceasefire and take our foot off the gas. We cannot do that. Stopping the genocide was the first step but our work is not done. We must dismantle the systems that brought Gaza to this point. And as we all know, those systems didn’t pop up on October 7.
We demand an immediate end to the siege that starves Palestinians and blocks vital aid. We demand an end to occupation and the structures of apartheid that keep Palestinians unequal and oppressed from the river to the sea. We demand accountability for the crimes against humanity Israel and its abettors have committed and continue to commit.
We demand a free Palestine, justice for every family, and the right of return for those forced from their homes. Nothing less than full liberation will answer the crimes we have witnessed.
They tried to silence Palestine. They tried to silence the world, but the world refused to be quiet. From streets and town squares, from classrooms and parliaments, people raised their voices until the world could no longer look away. That global outcry matters. But outrage without follow-through fades. Hope without sustained pressure disappears.
So keep going. Organize. Lobby. Boycott. Protest. Don’t stop talking about Palestine.
We will not accept crumbs. We demand justice. We demand dignity. We demand full liberation. We will not stop until Palestine is free.
